Pros and cons
+ what works
- +Free with no paid gating on the chat itself
- +Pick between many open-weight models from different labs
- +Chat UI is Apache 2.0 and the same code can be self-hosted
- +No training on user conversations per Hugging Face policy
- +Hard delete on user request, not soft delete
− watch out for
- −A Hugging Face account is required since 2024, no anonymous use
- −Available models shift as Hugging Face rotates what they host
- −No official Android app, mobile coverage is web or iOS only
- −Open-weight models still trail the leading closed models on some tasks
- −Hosting cost is absorbed by Hugging Face, long-term sustainability is on them
Privacy notes
Hugging Face states that conversations are private to the user, are not shared with model authors, and are not used for training. Chats are stored so you can revisit them and are hard-deleted when removed from the UI. Debug logs are kept up to 30 days without user content or tokens. Hugging Face operates as Hugging Face, Inc. in the US with Hugging Face SAS in Paris as the lead EU establishment under CNIL oversight, so GDPR rights apply for EU users while infrastructure may sit in the US.
