Pros and cons
+ what works
- +EU jurisdiction under GDPR, data controller is a French company
- +Generous free tier with web search, document upload, and image generation
- +Mistral publishes many of its model weights under Apache 2.0, so the underlying tech is inspectable
- +Per-account toggle to disable training on conversations
- +Enterprise plan is opted out of training by default
− watch out for
- −Free, Pro, and Team default to training on user conversations unless the toggle is flipped
- −Zero Data Retention is API-only, not available for Le Chat itself
- −Smaller plugin and integration ecosystem than ChatGPT or Copilot
- −Frontier reasoning and multimodal performance still trails the leading closed models on many benchmarks
- −Le Chat itself is proprietary; the open weights are a separate product line
Privacy notes
Mistral AI is headquartered in Paris and operates under EU GDPR. Le Chat conversations and uploaded documents are retained until the user deletes the chat or the account; Zero Data Retention is offered on the API but not on Le Chat. Training on user interactions is on by default for Free, Pro, and Team users and can be disabled per account in the Privacy settings; Enterprise accounts are opted out of training by default. An email-based opt-out for free users was added in February 2025 after a GDPR complaint.
