Pros and cons

+ what works
  • +Default end-to-end encryption on event details and attendee lists
  • +Swiss jurisdiction with strong privacy law
  • +Web client is open source, Android app source has been published
  • +Tight integration with Proton Mail invitations
watch out for
  • No CalDAV; third-party clients like Thunderbird or system calendars cannot sync
  • iOS app is not open source
  • Free tier capped at 3 calendars
  • Sharing with non-Proton users falls back to a read-only link

Privacy notes

Event titles, descriptions, locations, notes, and attendee email addresses are end-to-end encrypted on Proton's servers. Start and end times plus time zone are signed but not encrypted, since the server needs them for reminders and free/busy lookups. Proton AG is headquartered in Switzerland and operates under Swiss privacy law. There is no CalDAV endpoint, so calendar data only leaves Proton's apps via manual ICS export or read-only shared links.
