Privacy notes
Posteo is a privately owned German provider running on its own servers in German data centres, under German and EU data protection law. Signup and payment can be made anonymously: name and address are not required, and payment data is held separately from the account. Posteo does not log IP addresses by default, though a 2019 Federal Constitutional Court ruling means German providers can be compelled to log on judicial order. Users can opt in to a fully encrypted mailbox that re-encrypts incoming mail to their key on arrival, after which the operator cannot read message bodies. Annual transparency reports have been published since 2014.
