Privacy notes
Messages between Proton users are end-to-end encrypted by default. Messages to and from external providers can be encrypted via PGP or sent in plaintext. Proton holds the encrypted message store but not the keys. Proton AG is headquartered in Switzerland and operates under Swiss privacy law; subpoenas are limited to Swiss legal process.
