Pros and cons
+ what works
- +End-to-end encryption of file contents, names, and folder structure by default
- +Swiss jurisdiction with strong privacy law
- +Web, Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android clients are open source under GPLv3
- +Password-protected and expiring share links
− watch out for
- −No native Linux desktop client; community SDK and third-party apps fill the gap
- −Server-side code is not open source
- −Free tier is capped at 5 GB
- −Upload and sync speeds lag mainstream cloud storage in independent reviews
Privacy notes
Files, filenames, and folder structures are encrypted on the client before upload, so Proton holds the ciphertext but not the keys. Sharing uses link-based access with optional passwords and expiry dates; the recipient's browser decrypts in place. Proton AG is headquartered in Switzerland and operates under Swiss privacy law, which limits requests to Swiss legal process. All Drive client apps are open source on GitHub and have been independently audited.

Was not usable for family photo sharing. Encryption makes loading way too slow plus sync issues on macOS version (buggy)
