# PROS AND CONS
+ what works
- +Mobile auto-backup on iOS and Android with background upload
- +Local ML for faces, objects, and CLIP-based smart search, no third-party calls
- +Multi-user libraries, shared albums, and external library import
- +Active development with frequent releases and a full-time core team under FUTO
− watch out for
- −Requires Docker plus a Postgres + Redis stack, with at least 6 GB RAM recommended
- −Backed by FUTO in the US, so the project's primary stewards sit under US jurisdiction
- −Plans to add paid off-site backup as an optional add-on, scope still evolving
- −No native desktop client; CLI and web UI only
# PRIVACY NOTES
Self-hosting Immich keeps your photo library, originals, thumbnails, and metadata on infrastructure you control. The server does not phone home, and machine-learning tasks (face recognition, object detection, smart search) run inside your own container stack rather than calling external APIs. Operational privacy depends on the operator securing the host, fronting Immich with TLS, and managing backups responsibly.
