Pros and cons

+ what works
  • +No search history, IP logging, or user profiles
  • +Browser apps for iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows are open source under Apache 2.0
  • +Duck.ai proxies third-party AI models (OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Mistral) without storing prompts
  • +Available on F-Droid and ships with strong tracker-blocking by default
watch out for
  • Search backend is closed source and depends heavily on Microsoft Bing
  • US jurisdiction means exposure to US legal process and gag orders
  • 2022 Microsoft tracker exception undermined trust; partial carve-out for ad-conversion scripts remains
  • Result quality outside English-language queries lags Google for many users

Privacy notes

DuckDuckGo does not log search history, IP addresses, or build user profiles. Ads on the results page are contextual to the current query rather than profile-based. Search results are largely sourced from Bing under a syndication agreement, with DuckDuckGo proxying requests so the upstream sees only DuckDuckGo. DuckDuckGo Inc. is incorporated in Delaware and based in Paoli, Pennsylvania, so it is subject to US legal process. In 2022 researchers found the mobile browser allowed Microsoft tracking scripts on third-party sites due to the Bing syndication contract; DuckDuckGo amended that exception later that year, though some Bing ad-conversion scripts are still allowed for 7 days after a sponsored-ad click.
